From ten minutes ago:

Jade: I’m heading in to supervise clean up so we can get the place in shape to open tonight. Meet me there if you can.

Charlie checked his watch. A little after nine.

And that was that. Life just went on. It didn’t seem to matter what kind of earth-shattering night he had. He awoke to the sun rising, still breathing, and went to work.

Charlie showered and dressed, kicking aside his discarded clothing on the way to the door. He didn’t get the key in the lock before he was back in the apartment, however, collecting each garment and hanging them over the back of one of his tall bar chairs to be taken to the dry cleaners tomorrow.

Once he had the familiar paper cup from his usual cafe in hand, Charlie was starting to feel ready to face the day. Ready to go over the night with Jade, get things back on track for the club to resume its normal operations.

He failed to account for the questions, however. There were always questions.

“Charlie!” Jade accosted him the moment he slipped through the back door of Ropes. “You snuck out early. How was your night?” Her tone indicated she had a very good idea of who he left with.

Charlie clenched his jaw and tried not to let his emotions play across his face. “Yeah, sorry to bail on you. How’d everything go?”

Jade narrowed her eyes at him, clearly annoyed that she wasn’t getting any juicy details, but she let it go. “Smooth sailing. Honestly, I would prefer to have this place packed with old friends and pros every night. So much less handholding.”

Charlie knew what she meant. When everyone was a trusted friend with years of experience in their kink of choice, you could relax and not spend all of your time worrying that someone was going to get hurt. Those people could watch out for themselves and each other. If only throwing private parties would pay the bills.

“There is no way Dane isn’t going to make this an annual thing,” she added.

Charlie figured as much.

“One thing was a little strange.”

Charlie halted and turned back to her.

“Deidre had a small altercation with Noel’s friend Jewel. I’m not sure what the whole story was there, but maybe we need to keep them separated?”

He knew what that meant. Deidre had a standing invitation to the club that would never be revoked, so Jewel would no longer have the opportunities to perform that she had asked about at the party. Charlie made a mental note to check in with Dane and Noel about it, maybe shoot Deidre a text and get the full story. It was possible they had too much to drink, and it would turn out to be nothing.

“And McNamara?” he asked.

Jade shrugged. “Pretty normal night for Stefan. He spent some time in the private rooms, I lost track of who he was with in there, but there were no problems reported. His friends left shortly after you did…” She was giving him those curious eyes again, far more interested in talking about his night than her own.
